Norway's toughest hill race 2024

Norway's wildest hill race 2024 - an unforgettable experience!

For car enthusiasts, adrenaline seekers and motorsport fans, there was one thing that mattered in week 29: Norway's wildest hillclimb. From July 15th to 20th, Målselv and the surrounding area were filled with the roar of engines, scorched rubber and real car joy. Even though I didn't get to see the first three days, it was clear that this event was something very special – an experience like no other! Here is a short summary of all the exciting things that happened.

Day 1: Opening show at Finnsnes and Formula Offroad

The event started with a spectacular opening show at Finnsnes. Here there was smoke, show driving and drifting that made the pulse of everyone present increase. Cars were shown off, and the drivers impressed with their skills. Later it moved on to Formula Offroad, where off-road vehicles challenged themselves and the forces of nature on steep hills. A perfect start to a rough week.

Day 2: European Watercross Championships and free cinema

Day 2 offered splashes and speed in Lower Bardu, where the European Watercross Championships were held. It was all about driving snowmobiles on water in a track – a real action-packed competition. Even though I wasn't there, it was clear that the drivers had both wet and fun challenges!

In the evening it was time for a quieter experience: free cinema at Heggelia, sponsored by the Norwegian Armed Forces. A great initiative that brought together both participants and the audience for a pleasant break.

Day 3: Hill race part 1 and final in Formula Offroad

Finally, the hill races began in Målselv Fjellandsby. The drivers got to test the course and prepare the cars before the real action began. Later that day, the Formula Offroad finals were ready – a highlight for many. The combination of speed, challenging terrain and engine sound made this an experience the audience will never forget.

Day 4: Hill race part 2 and car show

On day 4, the focus was on the hill race part 2. Now it was all about giving it your all to get the best time. For the drifters, the goal was to create as much smoke and show as possible – and they delivered! I started the day at the top of the course and walked down to capture unique images of the race. The sound, the smell of burning rubber and the sight of the cars sideways up the mountain was absolutely magical.

Later in the day there was a car show at Nordic at Andslimoen. There was something for everyone: from old vintage cars to brand new Lamborghinis and Ferraris. A real party night for car enthusiasts!

Day 5: Show in Bardufoss center and Norway's wildest stretch

Day 5 started with an exciting show in the center of Bardufoss. Here the drivers showed off their skills and entertained the audience with impressive driving. Afterwards, there was a lineup of cars, and people had the opportunity to talk to the drivers and take pictures of the cars – including some spectacular Ferraris.

At the end of the day it was time for Norway's toughest stretch, a nerve-wracking drag race. The audience flocked to see the drivers give it their all. It started with a little rain, but the weather turned and created a perfect setting for the race. One of the highlights was Frank Valle beating a Tesla Plaid with his Ford Rally Fiesta. As they say: Ford = faster and faster than you!

Day 6: Hill race final

The last day was the final of the hill race, and the atmosphere was palpable. I started early to find the perfect spot to take photos. I gradually moved from the bend with a view to the starting line to capture more angles. The sun was blazing at over 20 degrees, but no one complained – this was an experience like no other.

The final ended with a record: Stian Hafseng set a new hill record in his Mitsubishi Evo6 Silhouette, breaking Petter Solberg's previous record. A fitting end to a fantastic week!

An unforgettable experience

The entire event was a success. From the opening show to the hillclimb finale, exhibitions and drag race – this was truly Norway’s most awesome hillclimb! I am grateful to have had the opportunity to photograph everything from up close contact with the cars to the audience experience. This is definitely a week I will never forget.

Now all you have to do is start looking forward to next year's hillclimb in week 29, 2025. For car and motorsports enthusiasts, this is an event you don't want to miss!
